Safi Habib and Farhan Baig

Ball hockey, street hockey or any type of hockey has been a growing culture among the Muslim youth in Canada, whether they were born here or brought up here.As the sport continues to grow, a need was identified to allow Muslims to be able to showcase the talents and skills they have developed over the years in a more competitive environment.

With this in mind, in 2004, two brothers in the Toronto area developed the idea to bring about all Muslim men and youth for a major annual tournament to do just that…prove to everyone that ball hockey is a major athletic staple among the Muslim community.  Both Safi and Farhan have been involved with this sport since childhood and are the founders of the Salaam Cup. The tournament’s main objective is to grow the sport among the Muslim population all across Canada to adopt ball hockey — and athletics in general — into their lifestyles.

From starting with just 6 teams, the tournament has grown to over 40 teams in both Seniors and Junior divisions with players coming as far as Vancouver and Quebec to participate. The next Salaam Cup tournament will be taking place the August 18, 19 and 20th at Carmen Corbassen Arena in Mississauga br. You can see more at www.thesalaamcup.com.
